ESSEX ELEMENTARY SCHOOL – Renovations & Addition

Essex, CT

Size:

90,000 sf

Architect:

Arbonies King Vlock

This construction management project involved renovations and an addition to an existing 76,000 sf, 50 year old elementary school. Work included renovations to classrooms and administrative offices, and the creation of a new bus drop off area and entrance on the east side of the building. The original project was modified to include an 8 classroom addition after it was discovered that a septic issue would have driven up the cost of simply expanding the classrooms. The 14,000 sf addition was built within the voter-approved budget, and provided “swing space” in which to move the students around during work on classrooms in other areas of the building. The new wing prevented the need to buy or rent portable classrooms, an expense that would not bring any return to the town. Construction began with the removal and replacement of a 10,000 gallon fuel tank, and the removal of an abandoned 500 gallon fuel tank on the southwest corner of the building. Construction of the new wing began in the summer of 2007, following construction of a new mechanical/utility area on the west side of the building.
