The transformation of the Aime Forand Building from a deteriorating, unhealthy space into the spacious new home of the state's DMV included interior renovations and installing a new cooling tower, building a concession and concession storage area, parking lot island renovations, asbestos remediation and removal of underground storage tanks. Visitors now enter into a large airy space bathed in natural light as part of a three-story atrium in the center of the building. The team took advantage of the existing features of the building – including the skylight and atrium – to design sustainably and efficiently. In addition to high-efficiency mechanical systems and daylight dimming, the building also incorporates green materials such as bamboo, linoleum, recycled carpet, and durable porcelain tile. The move into the newly renovated building from the old, one-story site in Pawtucket, has allowed transactions to be filtered by type on three different floors, and improved cutomer waiting areas and a concession area all add up to a more positive experience for Rhode Island drivers.
