Burton Football Complex & Shenkman Training Center
Storrs, CT
170,000 sf
Architect: Jeter Cook & Jepson / HOK Inc.

This new athletic complex earned LEED Silver and began serving the UCONN campus in 2006. An impressive 87.25% of construction waste was diverted from landfill disposal, and 7,000 cubic feet of peat excavated from the site were used to help restore and create wetlands at the site of a former landfill on campus. A stormwater pollution control plan (SWPCP), combined with other measures, reduces erosion and sedimentation, and 50% of the entire site was preserved as open space. With an indoor practice field with a 90' roof, the Mark R. Shenkman Training Center has considerable open space and inherent challenges in maximizing energy efficiency; infrared heating units, monitored by a Building Automation System, keeps players on the field comfortable, without having to heat the entire structure to a uniform temperature. Additional green elements include heat recovery units, low-emissive windows, dual-flush toilets & low-flow showers, locally manufactured products, and low VOC paint.
