This renovation project involved the total gut and structural upgrade of the existing neoclassical building. Completed within the tight confines of downtown Boston, the structure included cast-in-place concrete and a structural terracotta arch system, with the balance framed in conventional structural steel.

Highlights include extensive use of marble, limestone, interior glass curtain walls, ornamental plaster, and detailed drywall. A 160 x 120 glass skylight covers 2 atria. New mechanical/electrical systems and 10 new elevators and 2 new escalators were installed. The newly renovated building now provides the John Hancock Insurance Company with office space, a company store, public assembly area, fitness center and records storage.
