Brown University, Smith-Buonanno Hall Renovation

Smith-Buonanno Hall Renovation
Providence, RI
36,000 sf
Architect: William Kite Architects, Inc.

Located in the heart of the Brown campus, the original, historic Pembroke College Gym was renovated and converted into academic space. The masonry structure was altered to create two lecture halls, eight classrooms, a media center office and auxiliary/utility space. The gymnasioum was converted into the main lecture hall and additional classroom and seminar space were added above the lecture area and common room, giving the illusion of a suspended structure. Unique chrome accents, in conjunction with millwork and acoustic details, highlight the interior design. The slate roof was refurbished and a skylight added over the main lecture hall vestibule which allows natural light to pass through the second floor and penetrate the first.
